Can you tell or "hear" if your turbo is on it's way out?
MY00 UK, Decat, panel and TEK3
The old girl has done some 85k now and i've been the only owner. She's had a few spirited drives and been abroad more than a handful of times.
There are things that you can look after and change during the course of the servicing schedule but there are other items that get a hammering daily that I certainly would have no idea if it's buggered purely due to wear and tear.
So i'm driving along at about 60 mph in 4th or fifth, off boost, just tickling the throttle to maintain momentum. As the boost gauge hits + boost and just before the turbo is upto some sort of meaningful speed, there is a sound that can only be described as a slight mechanical rasping. Like a small chain or necklace being placed on a tin tray. Once the boost pressure reaches about 4-5psi the noise either goes away or becomes in audiable.
I wondered, how would i be able to tell if my TD04 bearings were on their way out or if the oil supply pipes were blocked or even if i had cooked oil on the turbo impeller shaft (or whatever its called)
Is it a DIY inspection thing or is it a consumable that needs changing?
PS I can't check for smoke under hard acceleration as I have a very dark tinted rear window
Cheers
*Takes cover as he kinda suspects what is going to be said*

It does sound like the turbo bearings are on their way out.
If you remove the exhaust downpipe, you can access the exhaust wheel of the turbo and check for play.
You can get a TD04 from ebay for under £50, or now might be a good time to 'upgrade' to a TD05

Could be just a ratlling heatshield or or a loose/disintergrating cat....if you still have another cat in there somewhere (full decat or semi decat? ).
Some turbos can fail and be perfectly quiet, yet some can sound like a jet engine on take off (latter sounds well cool...you can tell the kids you've fitted a jet engine )

My turbo was making a whining noise and one garage diagnosed that I needed a new turbo. When I visited the main dealer, they found that the exhaust manifold had come loose due to some sheared bolts and the noise was the pressure leaking out.
25,000 miles later and the turbo was still absolutely fine!
So even an expert can read too much into a noise!
