Default Bugeye WRX modifications

Ok, the warranty runs out in a few months and we have decided to start modifying when it does (as it probably won't sell). It will be an everyday/trackday car, and we are looking for a bit more power (no more than 300bhp) and decent suspension/brakes, but looking pretty standard. Roughly £4k to spend. We have looked at the WRC-Technology 280bhp package (£2k), Avo ajustable suspension kit (£800) and Tarox 6-pot 315mm brake conversion (£1100). Is there another company that does a performance package with more power for the same money? Are there better brakes/suspension for the same money?

2k for 280bhp is expensive. £1600 more like it.

Ok do you know somewhere that can get this sort of power cheaper?

Yep, API did my full decat scoobysport exhaust fitted for just over a grand. Then you have a mapper to pay for at around £600. This seems expensive, but around half that cost is the ecutek licence fee. Once you have the licence, subsequent mapping is a lot cheaper. I'm sure any of the specialists will do you a package for around this price. Of course if you want to stay dolphin friendly I suppose a good quality sports cat downpipe will add to the cost. Tarox six pot brakes sounds like a good price, not heard of those. Do you get matching rear calipers as well?

No you don't but the subaru twin-pots arent bad at all. We'll have a look around and see what places can supply a decent exhaust/remap. Next stage would be VF34 turbo for around a grand .

Again £1000 a lot for a VF34, I've seen them between £400 and £600. I would do some more shopping around and research on all the parts you want before taking the plunge.

IHI turbos are not the best choice..... IMO Mitsu TD05 16g would be a much better choice. Plus you can upgrade it and rebuild them.

I hear people have been getting up to 300 bhp on TD04's.

I'd say do the exhaust system and go for an apexi power FC (ECU). That should see you coming close to 300hp for a grand. You should probably have the headers ported too, invest in a knocklink, better fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator.

No need for an apexi on a new age really unless you want to go mega. 300bhp is pretty much the limit on a standard td04. Andy Forrest's hybrid td04 is apparently good for around 330bhp.

Ok, so for around 300bhp I want:

A decent exhaust system. (£600)
ecutek remap. (£600)
Better fuel pump/regulator (£200)
Maybe bigger turbo. (£600)
Better Air Filter/Induction kit (£100-200)
STi intercooler? (are they any bigger?)

That comes to about ££2200 (inc turbo) which I suppose isnt bad, and should maybe even get more than 300bhp.

Don't forget the labour costs and vat, unless you are able to fit everything yourself.

You can get around 280-290 with:

Full decat exhaust (~£600 as you said) BTW 2 1/2" helps retain excellent spool up..!
A panel filter (Green or K&N ~£45)
KL ~£100
Boost Gauge advisable (~£80)

All using the TD04 which if your happy with 300 then the instant spool make it the best choice. Not sure about fuelling on an 02 newage..?

BTW I bought my exhaust system of a fellow SN member for £350 (6mths old..!)

Scoobyclinic fitted it for £150 inc up & down pipe decats.

I made 284hp with the stock TD04 (now up to 297) with only a TBE, Up-pipe and HKS panel filter. These 'shops' will try to sell you everything that you dont really need. I have tried to point you in the right direction but, go for what you feel is best.

Ok, so for around 300bhp I want:

A decent exhaust system. (£700) <---Not decent exhaust REALLY REALLY good exhaust
ecutek remap. (£600?) <--- May cost you a bit more
Better fuel pump/regulator (£0) <--- dont need.
Maybe bigger turbo. (£0) <--- dont need for 300hp
Better Air Filter/Induction kit (£100) <--- I have a killer HKS/Velocity stack set up, cant use it with my FMIC. WOuld work great for you.
STi intercooler? (are they any bigger?) <----- Standard TMIC is ok to 300bhp

BVM I did get your PM, but I'm sure other people have other opinions. I'll get back to you when we've decided what we think is the best route.

Looks like we'll ring around a few places and get opinions, and see where to go from there. Thanks for all the advice.

You can't buy an STi for what Bugeye WRXs are selling for + £4k.

Well, thats what you should do! I love the STi... except for that horrible boy racer spoiler. BTW, give me 2k and a WRX and it will beat the STi... Still leaves me with 2k to spend or save!

Adam..

I'd choose the mapper first

For a car to drive on the road every day ..... Bob Rawle

For everything else on the bugeye on I'd go for Andy Forrest (Turbo) with Alyn at AS Performance to screw the right bits on (brakes and suspension) before the re-map
