Exclamation Engine check light came on

Hi All,

Last night my engine check light came on after putting my foot down for a minute. It then stayed on for half and hour and i tried turning the car off, leaving it off for a few hours and starting it back again. It was still there.

So turned the engine off again and just made sure everything was tight under the bonnet. Started the car - and no Light, went off!??!

Should I be worried that it came on and now has gone off, could it have been a sensor/plug loose that may have caused the light to come on and me checking stuff has tightened it again and so the light has gone off??

Does this warrant getting booked in to be looked at?

Thanks and help appreciated!

What year of car is it? depeneding on its age it may be possible to check if anything has gone wrong using the built in diagnostics check.

Sorry - its a 51 plate Bugeye.

Only mods are a centre decat and back box. I dont know about the checking codes or where to get a list of codes from hence why i was going to put it into a dealer if it sounded like an issue.

Car is fine, drives normal, no problems at all with it!?

Firstly mate don't panick. What car you got?

If its a classic theres a nice guide here on ecu fault finding and resets. Most certainly a sensor play silly buggers. But which one?
If you do decide to do some homework yourself interegate the ecu first for any held history before you go for an ecu reset. Once you have retreived any fault codes stored then fix the one with the lowest denomination first then move on to the next one. However with a bit of luck there only be one fault found anyway.
Re-setting an ecu by the way can be done one of two ways. Either follow the guide in the link above or you can disconnect the battery for an hour or so then reconnect. But only reset when you have checked for faults first.

If however your not happy certainly get the car in and checked out. It will be fine to drive. With the chk light on all the time the car goes into a safe mode. Don't go mad at this stage drive safely and get it checked out as soon as possable.

Right, a My01 then I think. Think the only way of checking whats up there is by taking it to a dealer//specialist who can hook it up to a computer//machine. On the earlier cars there are some connectors that when connected will flash the cel in a manner that will indicate a fault and depending on the duration of the flashes this indicates what sensor is possibly faulty.

Your car has a self learning ECU so if it does find a fault with one of the sensors then it will adapt within a short space of time//real time and cause the cel to go of.

Booked it in at a dealer to get the ECU read... hopefully nothing major and just a "spurt"

First time it has ever done it though!!

I have an 01 bug eye trust me its something you are going to have to get used to, had it 6 months and have been back with the cel 6 times 60 mile round trip not funny at all last saturday traded it for a civic just waiting for plate transfer and this nightmare will be over.
PS during my last inspiring (NOT) trip to subaru they said they may now know what it is it might be the neutral switch in the gearbox but its too late for me im out the above coupled with a faulty alarm and useless brakes have done my head in.

i take it that ECU re-set wont work on a 98 then? what about the battery disconnect, i thought it was supposed to be 4 minutes to re-set ECU?

ECU re-set will work on a 98 car. You either use the electrical plugs under the drivers footwell and follow instructions as per the maintenance manual to reset or you can disconnect the battery for at least half an hour. 1 hr better still.
