Angry Cars still a bugger after 3 Gems Remaps!!

All Suggestions welcomed.

Took my 1997 Wagon last April with Full decat and induction kit and Got Fitted,
  • fse uprated fuel pump
  • uprated fuel regulator
  • 550cc Injectors
  • 3 Phase boost solenoid
  • Gems ECU
  • Lightened Flywheel
1st Map - Overfuelling, flooding, 3 attempts to start
2nd Map - Overfuelling, flooding at low revs, 3 attempts to start, hunting idol when cold (induction cutting out intermitently on cold idol), flooding/lots of smoke when foot down below 2500 rpm. wow it stink of petrol when I stop.
3rd Map - All of the above + when I break hard engine cuts out or tries to idol at 300rpm.

I will be changing the induction kit this weekend and replacing TD04 with a TD05/VF34 soon.

Please help or suggest somebody that can help (preferably in the north)

Thank you

Mav

Is your fuel regulator plumbed in the right way round?

When I fitted mine, I got it wrong to start with and the full pressure of the pump went into the rails and overfuelled big time.

Not saying it si the same problem, but I would try another regulator if it is plumbed in correctly.
When mine did this, you could smell the overfuelling at tickover.

Fuel Regulator was fitted by an subaru mechanic. May have got it wrong, but woud the car not flood all the time rather than just at low revs/idol.

550 injectors seem way too big for the size of turbo, power that your car is capable of running in that state....................

however it does seem strange that the car is rich low down..........was it mapped on the rollers or in "real time" and by who??

With no rising rate regulation, the ECU would not find the need to increase the fuel so the higher revs would just burn the fuel more efficiently.

As I said, it may not be, but its worth borrowing another FSE from someone. Cheaper than a remap.

Does yours have the pressure gauge attached?

Couple of idea's

Change the mapper to someone how knows their stuff
Change the GEMS to something decent

Some of the (cheaper) 550's available are ****e at low flow situations, and may not be helping.

Oh and just because the regulator was fitted by a "subaru mechanic" don't just "believe" it's correct...

Not sure if this is any help.

But i had Gems on an MY98 car. (same 3 plug Ecu as yours)
Initially on installation, it would struggle to run, and we had a lot of problems with it.

It actually turned out to be a problem with the code on the Ecu, and had to re-write it.

Cant remember exactly what it was now,(might have been camshaft sensor, or similar) but there was excessive noise getting transmitted and the ecu was cutting everything out to compensate, eventually resulting in the car not running at all.

Is it maybe worth calling Steve Simpson, or someone else at Gems ?

Don't see the point in calling GEMS. Mapping issues are directed towards their mappers in which case Steve is their main man.
Since you're up in the north, he shouldn't be too far away from you to address any "mapping" issues.

FWIW not all cars running GEMS have problems, just that you only here of those with problems and a fair few of the cars which have been highlighted on public boards with "GEMS" issues, have turned out to have problems with the car ,rather than the map.

As an example, Steve done mine and is running well at 525bhp / 560Ib ft , so they can't all be bad!!

Alan, i more meant calling Steve etc... seeing as it was found that there was an issue with the ECU's for that model year on UK cars. (3 plug ecu)

Especially if he's had issues from day 1.

Apart from that initail problem, i had no complaints about Steves mapping.
