Default Can i use a different MAF?

As above really, i have an MY99 and have heard lots about (and suffered) MAF damage i will be looking for more power soon and was wondering if it would be a good idea to change the MAF if possilbe that is?

having already blown one engine i'm not keen on doing it again

any feedback welcome oh all knowing Guru's

You can change the MAF to a different more reliable one, most people use the Z32 from the Nissan 300zx TT but as far as Im aware you would need an aftermarket ECU to run it on? But someone will correct me on that if Im wrong!
