Default Can running out of petrol cause problems?

...Apart from the obvious of course!

I ran out of petrol last night and after filling it up the car started fine and I drove home.

The problem was this morning when I tried starting it was hanging around at 0-100 revs and eventually cut out. I tried again a couple of minutes later and same thing happened but managed to keep it going by putting my foot on the accelerator (didn't have any effect whatsoever at first but would suddenly rev and then fall).

Anyway, I drove to work and it did seem fine although slightly hesitant at times.

I was wondering if running down to the last drop of petrol would cause any long-term damage?

It can cause alot of muck from the fuel tank getting into the system which may cause temp problems, but the fuel filter should pick this up, depends on how dirty it is already.

not sure if theres any other damage it can cause?

Sounds like the crap in the bottom of your tank has entered your fuel system.
You could try a new filter and if still in difficulty try some fuel system/injector cleaner from Halfords etc.
Running wide open throttle on low fuel can cause damage. I have just seen an expensive after market piston picked up in the bore and from the owners description I think he kept his foot down on a long sweeping corner while suffering fuel starvation.

I dont know if its fact on subarus, but some fuel pumps are cooled/lubricated by the fuel there picking up.Starve them of fuel and they overheat and semi-seize

yeh most in tank pumps dont like to be run dry. they need the fuel in them to stop them burning out. run for more than a short while and they will go pop.

the filter on the fuel pump should stop crap in the tank going any further but its worth having a look and cleaning it out.. also replace the inline fuel filter. never a bad move.

Coincidently, I replaced the fuel filter last week, so it *was* a shiny new one. Would it be worth just emptying it out then to make sure there's not a load of crap in there?

It started ok this morning but it was idling quite high (1200 revs).
