Default Check Engine light

This light came on yesterday. At the time i was driving down the motorway, going fairly hard, not thrashing it though. It didnt go off after 30 seconds or so, so i pulled into a lay by and turned the engine off for 30 seconds. Upon restarting the light went off and stayed off. Any idea what this is? It hasnt come on since and ive done nearly 100 miles. Had a new battery last feb. Its a 99 uk Turbo wagon, 50k on the clock.

hi mate do a search for saxonfields, its a web site that tells you how to read the ecu diagnostic memory although its not working at the moment.

but if you connect the 2 black jack plugs above the pedal area (lie on your back and look up) then turn the ignition on the check engine light will flash the last known fault, ie 2 long flashes then 3 short flashes = 23 = maf sensor. turn the ignition off and disconnect the jack plugs. post the code on here and someone translate it for you.

Just an update. Drove to birmingham yesterday and the Revs started hunting badly when stopped in traffic. Varying between 1200 and 200 RPM. It cut out once. No dash warning light, but im going to attempt to read the codes tomorrow. Im suspecting MAF failure. How much for a new MAF sensor?

Cheers

Andy,

As others have already mentioned, you should either get it checked out by experts ASAP or read the ECU fault yourself. Please see the Reading ECU Codes page for detailed instructions.

Hi, ran the codes and the only one it has is code 32 Oxygen Sensor. Are these symptoms usual for a failing oxygen sensor, or do you think the MAF sensor has failed as well and hasnt yet stored a code.

Cheers

Nah, if it says 32 (and make sure it does) then that will be the fault. Three long blinks folloed by two short ones = 32

Turned out it was the MAF. Runs like a dream now. I changed the Oxygen sensor too as well. I wasnt expecting all the clicking and wuuring when i reset the ECU. I guess its normal! Cheers everyone.
