Default Misfire and Starting Problem

We (missus and I) recently bought a Jap Import Impreza WRX Sti and it has been great until the last couple of weeks. It's had a slight misfire, not bad enough to cause too much of a problem but noticeable all the same. Then, yesterday, the car wouldn't start at all. The RAC were called and by the time they got there, it finally started, they recovered it to a dealer anyway, just in case. The dealer has had a look at the fuel pump and now say that the car is running fine.

I am aware that there is an uprated fuel pump available (a bloke I work with was a member on here but has since sold his scooby) through this site but I am not sure that that is the problem. The car had No 4 coil pack replaced before we bought it, to cure a misfire, so I'm wondering if one of the other coil packs is on the way out.

Has anyone seen a similar problem? Is it worth replacing the fuel pump anyway, just to be safe? Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Probably a bad idea to reply to my own thread but the car is a 95 N platem, if that's relevant.

Just had exactly the same on mine....awful misfire, then it started once, even worse misfire then wouldn't start at all.

Bought a uprated fuel pump from Lateral Performance (0208 4205444) and it is fine now.

Hope this helps

Could be fuel filter sparkplugs or even coilpacks. If its missing on boost i would say plugs or coilpacks 1st off

I'm beginning to think that we have two seperate problems, the first is a fuel pump issue, according to the dealer, they have got the car starting reliably. The misfire is more than likely the coil pack(s), I reckon.

I'm going to fit the uprated fuel pump, once I have bought it, and then I'll see if the misifre is still present.

Cheers for the help people.

hey up

i had the very same on my 98. its the coils. had mine changed and all is fine now. fuel pump will not help the problem but will slightly improve the general running of your car. mine became more efficient. also try using NGK plugs as they are made for the jap cars and will help overall performance too.
hope this helps

Just an update, turns out that the clip for the fuel pump, under the rear seat, was faulty and, by the looks of the connector, has been arcing. I've hard wired it now and the car is running really nicely, no misfire or starting problems. My only remaining concern is that the misfire may have been caused by the pump only working intermittently, possibly causing some lean running.

I'll drop the plugs out at the weekend and have a look, the plugs were replaced just before we bought it with NGK 7s (it's an Sti) so they should be OK but I'll inspect the coil packs at the same time.

Thanks for the replies people, much appreciated.
