Default slipping belt when cold??

hey all,
recently my sons my99 sport a slipping belt noise seems to have developed when cold, or something is squealing away for a short blast of sound when load is put on the engine, say when reversing out of the drive, and another example down shifted from 3rd to 2nd and it made the noise for a more prolonged period (1-2sec), however after that it seems to be fine...?
any ideas... its incredibly annoying for him

cheers

Probably the power steering belt slipping at low engine revs, it's easy to tighten a little.....
