idle air control solenoid

idle air control solenoid
Hi, I've just recently bought a 95 sti which has an erratic idle and occasionly cuts out. Looking through past posts i found that some people had similar problems which was caused by the idle air control solenoid.
I have managed to improve the engine idle by slackening off the two screws that hold the solenoid in place and turning it until the engine settled to just below the 1000 rpm mark.
Is this the right way to do things or is there a correct/more accurate way to setup this solenoid.
Thanks!

It is a way to adjust things, but the ECU will try and make its target of around 800rpm. If the idle is generally bad, it may be poor Lambda sensors, as they degrade with age and take a long time to warm up. If you have an aftermarket dump valve that may also be to blame, and some induction kits can also effect things.
