Default What am I doing wrong?

When I bought my STI5 Type R last year it was in completely stock trim but coming from a 1.6 Focus it felt rocket ship fast. I backed this up with a 12.9 second quarter on the drag strip with a passenger, full trim, rubbish jap tyres and 3/4's of a tank of fuel. Oh yes, and it was my first time on the strip.

One year later and the stock spec is a thing of the past, it now boasts.....

H & S 3" d/pipe
Apexi N1 3" system
Ported headers/up-pipe
Walbro 255 lph pump
FSE fpr
Apexi induction kit with cold air feed
Apexi pfc
Apexi avcr
Apexi 740's
Hybrid fmic
TD 05/06 20g

and proably a load of other things that I can't remember.

Anyway, took it back to the same strip and in absolutely perfect conditions busted out a less that impessive 12.8. And that was my best time.

To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement. My launches were pretty spectacular given my shady tyres (soon to be a thing of the past) but they were the same ones as before. Surely the improved spec warrents an improvement more than 0.1 of a second. Oh yes, and I steadily dialled in more and more advance (up to 7 degs extra) with no improvements. The det was fine btw.

A dyno power run will be my next spend to see what the true power is but can anyone suggest what i'm doing wrong?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers

Not 100% sure on what all your mods are but hows your clutch ? Any signs its on the way out ?

More torque & power's no good if you can't get it down so clutch and tyres? Added to this weather conditions can greatly affect drag runs.

Having disappointments myself at the moment hope you get it figured out.

Also, was your first run in different weather conditions to the first? I have seen dyno runs differ vastly according to the humidity etc, cold dense air will help the car's performance.

Tyre pressures will make a differnce to the rolling resistance and the launch, also, it takes a hell of a lot of power to increase the speed of a car even slightly.

No idea what type of clutch is in it but there is no slip with it at all. It was good enough to pull several 30-40 feet all-wheel wheelspins with the diff locked.

As for the weather, I'd say last weeks was better than my original run. Both were in the dry but Sunday was bitterly cold. Excellent weather for drag racing.

Do these time sound right for the spec then?

its funny how often this happens....you do really well in your first go standard car...then you mod it loads and you expect to knowck massive amounts of time off and it doesnt happen.

To be honest mate your probably not doing anything wrong. I managed 13.9 in my standard UK WRX, then after a bigger turbo, intercooler, injectors, filter, and decat, i managed an almighty..........13.7.

sometimes what feels fast isnt fast at all and vice versa, just have another few goes, try a few different things, youd be surprised at how much is down to technique rather than all out power. Bob'5 is a perfect example. 11.7 with a 340bhp car.

I would expect more than .1 gain with the new mods that you have. You say shady tyres, probably the reason

If you're spinning your wheels to much, you're never going to get a good time. Anyway, did you do the mods to improve the performance on the road or the dragstrip?

A bit of both.

I know that tyres limit my performance but unless they're actually slower off the line with more power then I don't understand it.

As for technique, well I'm still a novice but Andy F was on the sideline and said the launch looked pretty good to him and I never missed a shift or anything.

Anyone know the price of a decent stroker kit or would I end up with a 12.7 for my trouble?

If you have got crappy tyres on there, don't forget that more power will cause less traction and could be the reason for a similar time. I wouldn't expect more power to shave that much time off a drag run anyway as the aerodynamics and weight of the car will be pretty much the same. The amateur drag addicts spend a fortune on their cars to shave off tenths of a second.
