I've recently fitted an H&S Jap style back box to my Impreza and although I really like it, on long journeys its just too much. After contacting Hayward & Scott they said they can provide a bung that drops the noise level by 6db.

Whats the deal with decibel levels? Its not just a sliding scale is it? read somewhere that 96db is twice as loud as 93db.

Anyone else fitted a bung to thier H&S exhuast, by how much does it reduce the noise?

 

Edd, you're right about the dB scale. Our hearing does not have a linear relationship between noise power and perceived volume, instead it requires a doubling of noise power to give a doubling of perceived volume. The dB scale is a convenient way of representing this, where an increment of 3dB represents a doubling of the noise power and perceived volume. Hence 6dB = 3dB + 3dB represents 2 * 2 = 4 times the volume, so a 6dB reductoin should be 1/4 the volume.

 

do you have a site that sale these bungs .can you loose performance ?
i was looking for a new system due to noise .but if these help id rather buy 1 of these
as i do like the look of the ex

Sirus - I rang H&S directly only becuase my back box is made by H&S.

So anyone actually got a H&S BB with a bung? I'm a bit pi$$ed with the back box becuase on a trip up to the NEC it came off one of the hangers and melted the bumper which is going to cost to replace. Plus the noise really got to me on the long journey.
