Question Welding Stainless Steel with an arc welder?

Can you buy coated arc welding rods to weld St Steel down pipe?
If so, where from please?

Graham.

You can pick them up from any welding supplier, bit iffy on the tube as it's so thin, it will silver solder but depends what type of joint you're welding. I have a TIG set if you want to borrow one

Sorry Graham, didn't get much chance to speak to Dave today, but you should be able to get them from any good engineers/welding suppliers.

You can stick weld it ie 2.5 low amps and tak weld it or if you can get hold of tig plant and its dc for stainless and steady hand you will do a good job but with tig you need filler wire

Thanks, 'got' some rods from work! Never knew we had any.
If it goes badly, then I'll tack everything and take it to a local specialist for Tig.

sorry to jump in on your thread graham....but its kinda related...purchased a straight through center pipe today, but for some strahge reason its too long for my my00 wagon and i cannot fit it with any of the rear silencers that i have,so i know that the center is at fault,so i need someone with stainless steel welding knowledge/equipment to cut and shut it 2 inches shorter,in the midlands/birmingham area.....any ideas?

Yes, but not me! (never welded ststeel before)
There is a really good shop who will do small welding stuff while you wait we use at work for specialist welding.
Can't recall the name here, but they are just down the road from North Gate area Walsall.
You might find them in Yellow Pages. think the name starts with a B...like BT Welding Services type of thing.
I will find the name and mail back on here monday.
Will probably end-up there myself.....

Graham.
