Default Highest power figure from a TMIC

hi all,

am considering future options and am wondering what the power capabilities of a TMIIC are.

I know Andy F was making well over 500 with a custom set up, but I am talking about an off the shelf product from the likes of mrt, hyperflow, or even an sti 8.

I only really know the popular high powered fmic cars, so would appreciate hearing about how the other side performs!

I think the std STi8 TMIC is good to 400 with reasonable boost. Some have been known to split above 1.3bar but others have got away with 1.7bar peaks so watch this. The other TMIC don't seem to be any better at cooling or flow than the STi8 but may hold together better.

My experience shows the temps to be as good as a FMIC with 330 BHP so this bodes well for upping the power for me. I'm even thinking of going back to the std scoop its that good.

interesting.

I was contemplating the higher boost levels, so I guess I might be taking a risk with a standard tmic.

thanks for the info.

mine split at 1.5 bar but repaired ok with fibreglass. mine was not up to the job (with a big scoop) at 370bhp so i have now put a FMIC on and there is a big difference in the performance on boost. Floyd has done a lot of other litle heat managment tweaks though that i did not. see his project thread for details

i.e the sti8 temp goes up and up.............till you get det at 50deg charge temp. The FMIC i have yet to have seen over 25deg even when ragging the car.

I have a V8 on my Sti V3 @ 1.41 peak boost, (407 bhp) and i think it only works for a short time before heat soaks in.
The group buy Hybrid at £380 is a steal, and a V8 for a classic will cost about £200 plus 'conversion'
I would go FMIC if i had my time again.
Graham.

As previously mentioned, I run the Sti5 at 556 bhp on a custom tmic however, prior to this i had run the Sti8 tmic on the same set up, although it was never on the rollers, it showed only 40bhp less on my 'in-car' Apexi RSM.

I use the hyperflow TMIC. It needs a couple of shims under each mounting point for it to align with the manifold inlet properly.

Otherwise I have found it to be very capable at the mid 300bhp level. It looks like a fairly open bar and plate design, so should flow well, but may suffer from insufficient cooling due to lack of shrouding etc. It's all seam welded so isn't going to be worried by boost.

Cheers

I've seen up to 380 hp on a stock phase 2 tmic (using AP22). You are restricted a little by ambient temps though (ie; in summer it drops to around the 350 mark). Will be trying an STi8 one in due course.

Whatever you do, don't go for the phase 2 APS. Or if you do, buy the one collecting dust in my garage for very little money Anything too heavy gives a good first power run, but on track heat soak soon causes problems.....was always an issue, became unnaceptable once the (bigger) 6MT went in.
