How easy to get the gearbox off?
#2
If you can get the car up about 9 inches (eg with a wheel under each tyre) then you'll have enough room to work underneath.
A gearbox jack is invaluable, especially if you are going to be working with a six speed at any point.

Given that he then needs to check the engine works, i would suggest leaving the engine in.
When you say it "wont turn" can you hear the starter turning or trying, or can you not hear anything?
If you 50+% decent with mechanical things then you can do it on trolly jack etc. If your not, dont even think about it.
Serious question here.
Is the car still under warranty (ignore mods for now)? If answer is yes, then did your car come with a 3 year recovery package? If answer yes, roll car onto the road (if it isnt already) pick phone up, ring roadside recovery, tell them engine wont turn due to clutch failing, and you need the car recovery to a garage, then tell them which garage.
Wait for truck to arrive, watch car go to the garage of your choice.

No need for the , it was just a thought.
When my 2.0l blew, it was still within the 3 year time period, so i rang subaru assist, who took it where i wanted it to go. It may save you a collection charge (if your chap charges you for one)
