Steering Lock to Lock

I assume this is the correct area for steering....
For all you experts out there why is that modern cars with power steering are not designed with minimum steering wheel movement for lock to lock? eg say 3/4 of a full turn which would allow full steering range without letting go of the wheel. Much safer, in my opinion, especially for opposite lock experiences.
Some may say it would be too sensitive, but I remember when I first went karting and initially had trouble staying off the walls on the straights!! OK, an exageration, maybe, but for those who have been karting you get the gist and you get used to it.
