my car was recovered by a company that use a tail lift type recovery vehicle which raised the front wheel and drove off, they them abandonded it and said that they had to get a flatbed as the wheels had locked up.
car still drives, but would it have shagged the center diff? or anything else for that matter?

If it helps, I've just had two recoveries from the RAC lately, and both times as soon as it became clear that it needed towing, the first thing they checked was whether it was 4wd, then they sent a flat bed. It's common knowledge that 4wd cars need a flat bed, every towing firm knows it, so if they didn't they were incompetent.

You can tell them that u will be claiming for damages. (and hope that your car is a write off and u will gat it all through insurance) if not then carry on with the claim.
Try and find out now (b34 they claim to of forgot) which employee took your car. when, y, where, how far they got etc. (maby do this b4 u tell them u gona claim - they forget things, and lose paper work very quickly as soon as u tell them)

Damage will be to the centre viscous coupling of the centre diff unit - the excessive pressure of one shaft rotating (rear axle) and the other being fixed (front axle) blows the seals, allowing gearbox oil to mix with the seperate silicone oil used inside the (sealed) viscous coupling.

If it was only towed a short distance it will probably be OK.
If the centre viscuos is U/S you often get a vibration and it is not difficult to determine it has gone.
Replacements are easily found and it is not a big job. The viscuous diff is bolted to the rear of the gearbox. Take care as UK cars have a 1.1:1 drop gear set and Jap cars are 1.0:1.
