Default Hesitating Impreza 2000 – any advice please?

Hi everyone

Sorry to get straight into requesting info without giving anything back but I’m trying to help my brother out with a strange problem that he’s having with his newly bought 99 plate Impreza 2.0 Turbo 2000 estate which seems to be baffling the specialist that he’s taken it to.

The turbo seems to be dropping boost and generally hesitating whilst accelerating through the rev range. So far the specialist has changed the spark plugs, air flow meter, CO2 sensor, fuel filter and even put in a different ECU but the problem still persists. I know very little about mechanics but I wondered whether one of the turbo or intercooler hoses was either damaged or perhaps partially collapsing under boost? The “check engine light” came on briefly but it’s not showing any error codes after plugging the laptop into it…

Both me and my brother would really appreciate any advice or thoughts that you guys might have regarding this as we don’t really know what or where to look next!

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about that one, my brother hasn't mentioned anything about the boost solenoid being cleaned but I'll pass on your advice.

Thanks rexabusa, I really appreciate any feedback as my brother is starting to get a bit miffed with it all now!

if you dig about old threads you should find info on cleaning it.
mine was giving me grief with it sticking. if you connect test plugs under dash below steering wheel (think green connections) the solenoid starts clicking, when clicking fire about half a can of brake cleaner through it.
by the way can you hear it click when holding revs about 2000rpm.
it could also be a duff wastegate actuator.
good luck mate as i had a few teething probs with my sub, but now i cant see past it.

if boost is dropping off sounds like it may be over boosting, has it got decat fitted? decat downpipes can cause over boost problems without remaps so i've been told. Also does weather make any difference to it? what fuel is it being run on?

first thing i would look at would be the maf on that year of scoob, boost would drop due to it going into safe mode!

Wow, thanks for all the advice guys. I've just come back from lunch to find all these replies and I'm dead chuffed with the feedback!

Cheers for the cleaning instructions rexabusa I'm just going to attempt to pm you now.

Tidgy, I think the car is standard so as far as I’m aware it hasn’t had a decat pipe fitted but I guess everything is worth checking. From what my brother has told me it seems to be misbehaving in all weather conditions. As for fuel, I’d hope that he’s putting in the good stuff but it’s possible that he’s using standard unleaded (the missus is strict with his budget!) which I shouldn’t think is helping.

Jonny gav, I’ve been reading through some of the posts relating to engine hesitation and it would seem you’re right in pointing the finger at the maf but I think, as Tidgy pointed out, that it might have been replaced if the air flow meter (should that read “air fuel meter”?!) is the same thing as the maf?

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to help me out with this.
