Default Deciphering faults codes

First off I have a 99 Turbo Wagon, which now idles at 2500rpm

So I put the green and black plugs together under the dash to put car in diagnostics mode. I turn the ignition on and try to count the pulses of the Check Engine light. Now the light stays on all the time, and I can only detect slight variations in the brightness of the Check Engine light. Is this normal? As I'm having real trouble telling the difference between the brighter and darker states and as such counting long and short to get the code. Is there any trick to this?

Maybe you are right, I will try it. Only it says on below website to connect both green and black:

You are right! It was just the black connectors. Bloody website! I spent ages trying to figure out the code with the green connectors plugged in.

Code is 14, which I believe is fuel injector no. 1

Thanks for spotting a problem with the web site. I've corrected it now, apologies for that. My mistake, although given that it's a Wiki anyone can click edit on any page and correct information as required.

With regards to fault code 14 I recommend you call the dealer and they will tell you over the phone. I've just cross checked the information on the website and the Subaru Workshop manual for MY98/99 only lists the fault codes in the first table of the referenced web page. They make no mention of code 14.

I can't think now a faulty Fuel injector would cause your idle to do up - down perhaps but not up. Keep us posted how you get on and or confirm this code.

-Steve.
