Unhappy I think i found the Instigator!

I am getting smoke / steam rising from the engine bay, at first it was thought to have been some oil on the pipes that were changed. I drove the car for 90 odd miles on the motorway and would have thought that would have cleared it up but it was still there..

The amount would increase as i would hold the car at hight revs, so i checked under the car.

The steam / smoke was raising from where the Up-pipe joins the headers, at first i thought maybe it is leaking but after getting under the car, i could see a line of oil on the down pipe!

I think the Rocker Cover Gaskit is gone, and that is where the oil is leaking from down onto the up-pipe!!!

Really i did not need this now, as i have just finished stripping the car and was hoping to put it up for sale..

Am i correct in thinking this?

sounds about right Sam.................common issue for the O/S to be leaking, fairly cheap and straight forward to fix..............

I was actually hoping that there would have just been a little amount, but the smoke is just not going away...

I have read they cost near £35...is this correct? or can i buy cheaper from anywhere else..?

Also would like to have it on Saturday so that i can fit on, well try to anyhow..

Residual oil will smolder for ever unless you wash it off with a solvent.
On oem headers the oil gets between the manifold and the heat shields so cannot be reached.
Good hot run needed!

Just poped to the Subaru dealer and picked up the kit..cost £27

I have done many searches and they all pretty much say the same thing:

Take off the air filter box, undoo the 6 bolts and the Rocker cover comes off..

Install the new gaskits and replace the cover and the filter box.

Is it really this easy?

Hope you all had a good Christmas...

What is the working space like? i have not yet taken off the Air-box, is it quite easy to get my hands down the side, or am i working blind in some places?

Thinking will it be easier if i get someone to fit for me...not sure who though?

Okay, the air box has been taken off, just need so help:

Am i ok to assume i need to take off the bolts i have marked in red in the pic below?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...aru/gaskit.jpg

Does the cover simply fall off once these screws are taken off? or is there something else involved..

that's pretty much the idea. I would undo the drives side engine mount and jack the engine up a little, this will help sto oil continually dripping. And cover the exhaust manifold with something to stop it picking up lots of oil.

You should be able to get in with a small 10mm socket on a 1/4" ratchet to undo the bolts, they don't need to be mega tight on assembly either.

Get the head properly clean where the gasket goes, and apply sealant at least all the way round the bottom, front and half way up the rear (personally I do all the way round). You need to put a little extra in on the corners where the gasket sits in around the base of the rounded cam caps.

the rocker cover will be most likely still "glued" in place, it should come off with some light leverage from a screwdrive. Engine mount bolt is located above the ARB about 30cm from the centreline of the car. Exhaust manifold = headers.

Right...Rocker cover is off and i am in the process of cleaning it...

What sealant do i need to use? Do i put the sealant int he groves first where the gaskit goes then push the gaskit over it then put more sealant on?

Also do i do the same for the smaller ring type gaskits in the center of the cover aswell?

In the kit i got from Subaru, they have given me 2 half moon plastic bits...can't seem to figure out where these go?

Unless those half moon shaped gaskets are cracked, or have came away from the head, don't worry about them.

As for sealer, you should use Three Bond, but if you don't have that, i'm sure Hylomar will suffice.

Probably best to use some if you can, but I was in this position a month or so ago and re-fitted the rocker cover without sealant. I coated the seal in a little oil after fitting, not sure it that helped any, it was mostly out of guilt at not having used any sealant! anyway, its been fine ever since (touches bit of dead tree quickly)

If you don't use sealant it WILL leak, end of story.

Going to go buy some Three Bond sealant tommrow...Never used the stuff before...

Question:
Do i apply it in the groove first where the gaskit sits? or do i apply it after the gaskits seated in place?

Also the smaller 2 rings in side the rocker cover...do these need sealant puting on them aswell?

Also
I have noticed from other threads on this subject that 6 new bolt seals should have been included in the gaskit kit...? I do not have these...can i use the existing ones?

Hoping to have it back in the car tommorow...

Thanks

You don't need to apply sealant to the groove in the cam cover, probably best to apply to the head, but easier to the face of the gasket that mates with the head. You can reuse the bolt seals, a little sealant around the hole (a smear is enough) can help, at least on the lower bolts. The gaskets round the spark plug holes are usually okay, but a thin smear of silicone wouldn't go amis.
