Question Oh no not my gearbox!?!

Hi guys wonder if you can shed some advice on this...

Whilst taking my car to get its m.o.t today,i was changing down through the cogs then suddenly 3rd gear made an horrible rattling noise but the other gears are ok (for now!). Although the car did pass its m.o.t so on my way home i thought i'll miss 3rd and go into 4th but it screams back at me so i can only go to 5th then drop down to 4th and no screaming!

So is the box telling me its re-build time if so how much will this cost

its an MY94 STI saloon and i guess its very different to an wrx box.

If it is re-build time who knows of a good gearbox rebuilder in the middlesbrough area!

Hope you guys can help

I only know of one decent box man, call David at www.apiengines.com but he is in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

You might call Scooby clinic in Wrexham way (I think)

Definately API Engines, Warwickshire, (David's THE man to speak to) or Powerstation in Tewkesbury.

If you go to a main dealer it'll cost you somewhere between £1500 and £2300 depending on the extent of the damage. I had mine rebuilt a few months back by a main dealer (1/3/4/5/R gears plus syncro, shaft) - £1588, plus Subaru paid £700 on top!!!

I would imagine API or PS will do it for much less than that and it'll be just as good a job (if not better TBH).

Edit: I think API have a low-loader too. Anyone confirm?

Thanks for help guys

Ive sorted out a local company who do impreza re-builds,have been told 3rd and 4th have gone. Although he did say it is a common problem for 3rd to go.The price for this repair is £800+vat but it has to be done!
