Question Revs raising and falling on freezing mornings.

Only on the coldest of mornings when I start up the car the revs go up then drop suddenly. The revs go up to 2-3000 then drop off and sometimes stalls. When the revs go up and down I also hear a relay or solenoid clicking. The car is a 94 wagon import with a scoobyecu and de-cat.
Please help before I am forced to pay £75 +vat per hpur at the dealers!!!!

I had an Audi 80 that used to do that only when cold, it would even do it whilst driving, stalling because of lack of revs, usually during gear change. Turned out to be a faulty thermostat telling the ecu the wrong temperature all the time. I.e. saying the car was warm when it was cold and turning off automatic choke etc.
Learnt to live with it because it was a cheap car. Although, it does sound the same as what was happening.

When was th elast time it had a full service? I had these probelms on my old MR2. Serviced it all changing plugs, lead etc and no problems after that. I'm sure it might be a little mroe then that but would be a good start.

Auto choke adjusts the amount of fuel when needed on cold mornings especially.
I have had cars that when the choke was on the car used to 'run away' with its self due to the added fuel. When in neutral the revs would be higher than normal due to the choke being in. I have known that when the choke is removed while the engine still needs it (especially on cold mornings), the revs can dip and sometimes stall due to lack of fuel.
Can you remember the manual choke where you used to pull it out and all it would do was adjust the position of your accelerator pedal?

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly last time

I'm not as old as you probably think.....

G reg. 1.1litre Fiesta LX - manual choke, on the steering column, right hand side, near the ignition. Its there believe me, on those cold mornings, it was there.

Don't know enough about auto chokes to say whether it goes to a set amount of revs or just hunts for the best fuel to air ratio and settles there until warm.

I had the same prob on my 93 import wrx. turned out it was a combination of the maf and he engine coolant sensor. which is a right basta*d to fit like 99% of the other sensors!!!!! arrghhh!!.

Saying that they should show on your error codes.

There are two cables under your steering column which when connected together flash your check engine light a number of times. The number corresponds to an error.

Check this site out, its quite detailed.

Throttle sensor or air control valve assembly may be?
These two are most common with such symptoms.
