Exclamation Anyone whos done a DIY engine rebuild...

Anyone whos done a DIY engine rebuild... just after any advice, good point and bad points... as i'm thinking of doing mine myself...
I'm taking the engine out this weekend... but am seriously thinking of rebuilding it myself... its one way to learn...
Not really looking at doing it just to save money, but would be nice to get to know the engines, as it all looks abit complicated at the moment...

I did mine, if you want to register on the P1woc there is a thread in the projects section with a lot of guides in. From taking it out, building and tuning with a lot of mods in there as well.

Not a lot of use posting the link as you have to be a member to view - its free though and you will be made more than welcome

They are fiarly straightforward, you have just got give yourself, sufficient CLEAN space to work, take your time, and be methodical. Also ensure you have sufficient tools, eg different torque wrenches (3/8's and 1/2)

Make sure everything is cleaned thoroughly.

Some of the pdf documents in here http://206.13.93.15/STi_Stuff/STi_Manual/sti_dir.htm are very useful, especially for things like the torquing sequence, and clearance's.

However, i would suggest when you come to small bolts, that it suggest say, 6fltb that you do them by feel. An example is on the cam caps, cant remember specific torque, but i did one once, where i used the suggested torque rating, and all were fine except one, which just sheered!

I'd go for it. I have done two now two different cars.
Shall shortly be doing my third after holing a piston last weekend.

Take your time, be meticulously clean, use the right tools and buy one of them there manuals. If you get stuckask on here for advice the guys on here helped me no end.

You'll never look back.

Yeah, but you cheated by starting with a complete, new Short Block, and just bolted on the bits!!

The subaru manual is actually a very good reference on how to do things right. The manual and a clean environment to work in goes a long way.

Question

I ain't got a garage to work in... well I have use of one if needs be... but just built a car port at the side of the house... will see how I get on...
Took me a while to read about P1mark's project... can't believe the hours you've put into the heads... it just looks awesome mate... a real credit to you... just goes to show what can be done will alittle willing... love to know what bhp it is...
I'm hoping to have mine up and running again for early April... still trying to find out info on the STi8 crank... anyone know if it'll fit straight into my STi ver4 block?
May end up just buying a complete STi8 bottom end and uprate rods, pistons, and oil pump...
Or will my uprated pistons and rods out of my ver4 block fit in the STi8 block?
