Default steering problems

Recently i noticed with my scoob that the steering has been clonking when turning the wheel on stand still. While coming back the other night i noticed that there was about a inch worth of play on the steering wheel, which had me worried.

luckly i got home ok, and while i was parking up all of a sudden, i lost the steering, the wheel turns round and round but theres no movement on the wheels!

I've had a look this morning, and it seems the joint onto the rack has come off!

The query i have is, is there supposed to be splines on the rack side which the joint fits into? i can see splines on the shaft coming from inside the car, but cant feel any splines on the rack its self.

How does the joint hold onto the rack? is it just a point of tightening up the joint onto it?

The cars a wrx95 jap import

thanks
hetz
