Question How Far Do I Need To Go?

I posted this in the wheels, tyres and brakes section, but got no response, so I thought I'd try my luck in here.

I'm planning some power upgardes for my 2002 WRX which should give me around 300-320 bhp max. The car will be for fast road use only.
I intend upgrading my brakes before doing this, but I'm unsure how far I need to go.
As a minimum I will get better pads all round, braided hoses and DOT 5.1 fluid.
I've looked at the Godspeed and AP Racing kits, but don't want to spend the cash on them if I don't have to.
My main priority is that the car stops safely obviously! Any advice would be appreciated.

One very simple answer to your question here, sell your WRX and buy an STi.
Work out how much it will cost you for the bits you want and the price of the car, in addition, find the base cost of a type UK STi PPP of a similar age/mileage to your own car, i think you may be a bit shocked at the difference (or lack of )
Actually, just look here http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthrea...58#post5445358

I know that's the sensible thing to do, but I'm keeping my WRX thanks.

Well your down sides will be a hike in insurance, greater wear on your clutch/gearbox, a new turbo, exhaust, brakes, remap.
Its cheaper to buy that STi which can take the power and comes with 330mm brakes as standard.
You may be attached to your wrx, but its not a good modding point compared with the STi which can provide all you want virtually out of the box without straining parts

I hear what you're saying Tony, but I'm not buying an STI! .

Anyone help with my original question?

Costs:-
Turbo:- min 600 quid.
full decat exhaust 500quid
brake upgrade to something that will acutally stop you over the subaru 4 pots
1000 quid
remap, 650 plus vat
Insurance hike, depends on who your with but probably significant, 50% on your insurance.
Also consider a new clutch and gearbox in the equasion, they may not go straightaway but they will eventually go depending on how you drive:-
cost around 2-2.5k
STI intercooler, around 300 quid (worth getting)
Knocklink and sensor 150 quid
gauges can wait but put aside 3-500 quid for these, they do come in handy.

Works out around 3k initially for a decent upgrade.
See my point yet?

i have the AP 6pot's on my 2002 wrx running 320 bhp and they are unreal, probably to much for road work but I found the stock 4pots rubbish

I know of people using godspeed and not to many complaints

I didn't upgrade hose's , disks , fluid untill i went 6 pots, new front pads made a small difference

last thing i will do is swap for a STI but im hoping to go close to 400bhp in the next year - a sti will give me nothing more apart from the 6 speed box

I no the feeling, Ive gone to far with my 2004 WRX that a STi would be downgrading. The only thing that a STi could give me would be the 6-Speed gearbox, but I aint to keen on it, as I love my 5-speed, just a shame that its on its limit.

Also agree about the AP 6-Pots with 356mm discs, they are amazing probably to good for fast road use, But well worth the upgrade over the standard Subaru 4-pots.

Thanks for the comments guys. The AP 6 pots are great by all accounts, but they are very expensive.
Anyone have any experience of a pads and hoses upgrade or any other suitable options for 300 to 320 bhp?

I would say that they would be the best thing to do if you dont want to spend £1.5k on the AP 6-pots.

But also see Prodrive Alcon brake kits come for sale on here occasionally for around the £500-600, and Ive heard they are quite good.

I'll check out some breakers for Brembos. That could be the way to go. I didn't realise they were a bolt on job.

Yup bolt on, BUT you will also need the wheels that will accommodate them, so another few hundred quid there
Not as cheap as it seems this modifying lark

I've got wheels that will accommodate them already Tony.

Thanks RON, something else to consider.

If you're serious about stopping then pay for AP's and don't mess with halfway houses of Brembo's. Buy cheap buy twice....

Mike wood has recently said that you can't put the Brembo kit on a WRX without it effecting the brake balance. Something to do with the master cylinder not being big enough fot the piston sizes..IIRC..!

I've just replaced my worn out oem pads (on my 05 WRX) with Pagid 421's/ goodrige hoses and motul 5.1 fluid. Cost £205 delivered from ASP and I can HIGHLY recommend this mod. It has totally transformed the braking capabilities of the car in a way that is hard to believe and for £200 well worth it IMHO..!

"Richewong" has just done the same upgrade on his (04..? WRX) with pagids and if you don't believe me check out his comments..!

Thanks jasonious. I'll give that a try first for sure. Sounds like good VFM and if I need to do more later I can.
