Default maybe a coil pack problem

I own a 95 classic Scooby Jap Import and I think I need to replace the coil packs as it is very lumpy on tick over.

Would you say stick with original Subaru ones or are there better?

Any advice on this would be great.

Thanks
Richard

I had a similar problem.

Turned out to be mucky plugs from running rich.

If you haven't checked them then have a look at the plugs and the coils at the same time ...

before splashing out on needless coils.

Ok thanks, will check the plugs and Coil Packs before I spend any cash.

It seems to be pulling fine through the rev range, but sometimes it seems to have flat spots....I have noticed this more when pulling away in first. Fells like the turbo starts boosting then dies and then takes off again. If that makes any sense!! lol

Thanks again

What you are describing is exactly what I was getting.

Kept being told it was a coil issue but luckily it was the plugs.

Makes sense to check all the cheaper/easier to fix solutions first

If your checking the plugs, you can check the coil packs at the same time as youve gotta remove them to get to the plugs!!
When the coilpack is removed, there is a rubber grommet, just remove this and check for cracks or missing bits underneath it. Easy to spot

Change the plugs first if its still does it gap them 1mm less that recomended. if the car runs better its your coil packs.

Question Lumpy tickover

Hi,
Think I've got a similar problem with my MY96 UK car. Had 90,000 mile service just after xmas it was fine beforehand but now it seems to be missing slighty when starting from cold and gets lumpy on tickover when its warmed up(though the revs stay constant). Is this like whats happening with your car?
Thanks
Nick

Hi Mr Toad,

Yeah it does sound the same...I wouldn’t say mine was missing when starting from cold thought.

I will be changing my power steering pump at the end of the week as its leaking fluid from the sensor. So I will check the plugs and Coil Packs while im at it.

Does anyone have any suggestions which make/model plugs to get if I need to change them?

NGKPFR6B will do the job. Not sure what spec your car is but you shouldnt need 7B unless youre running the far side of 300BHP.

Gap them at 0.7mm or knock them down to 0.6mm to see if it helps.
