Dangers of running without a thermostat...??
As title, can anybody shed some light as to what the dangers are of running without a thermostat.
(Ive had some problems, since refitting my radiator, it wouldnt get hot.. even after a run, it was still stone cold..... so ive put a new thermostat in, and same problem.
So, over the weekend, i took the thermostat out, and sure enough i get a flow through the radiator, it heats up appropraitely and the fans come on ok.
Im guessing the good news is, the water pump is ok....)
Any advice??
thanks
Frank

I dont think your fans should coming on when you havent got the thermostat in. I know mine didn't when I ran for a few days without one.
Dont think there would be any major danger, just an increase in fuel use (due to engine running cooler), but IMO I wouldn't do to much hard driving as your oil temps would probably be lower as well (cant confirm this as I dont have an oil temp gauge)

I believe the thermostat stays shut while your car warms up, keeping the water in one place to warm up to the required temp ie on those cold winter mornings.
Then the thermostat opens when hot enough (and you get hot air in the cabin) and the water then flows around the engine, through the radiator to maintain a safe level, so really the only problem you will have is first thing when starting up............no hot air for a while !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will take longer for the engine to get to normal coolant and oil temp and therefore will remain in the higher engine wear temperatures for longer..
Sounds like you have an air lock.. drain and refill slowly with heater on hot.

Ive got the same as above. Have drained and refilled ever so slowly 3 times but to no avail
Just running without the stat at the min. The weathers good at the moment with good air temperature. Just giving it more time to warm up before i start off

<<<<<<I had the same problem this time last year. Took the thermo out ( havin same probs as mentioned above). It will run ok ...but on long journeys the engine would cool right down to a level well under the normal operating temp. Which cant be good.
Test the Thermo first in boiling water, drop it in and hey presto it should open up. I got one off ebay, which was f**ked, and I snapped a nut off in the block!!!! so be careful down there tightening those nuts up.!! nightmare!! anyway got one from the local subaru dealer and all is good.
hope this helps

Running no thermostat in the Uk is a NO NO.
The engine is designed to run at 80 +C and with no thermostat you will not achieve that temperature normally except when using lots of power.
It would seem you have a problem.
Attack the root problem and refit the thermostat.
Even running a low temp thermostat in winter in the UK may not be a good idea.

I brought a thermostat the other day.
Ive fitted it and still had the same problem as above! It states this is the right thermostat for the model but it looks a lot bigger than the OEM one.
Anybody who has replaced one can they tell me if their replacement was bigger or the same size as im not sure now if i have the right one
