Right, after having sort of decided on what spec of engine build to undertake for getting my ver.6 type r ready for hillclimbing, i decided to trawl through all of the old threads tonight with regards to 2.3/2.5 and turbo choice. Bad move, maybe, and i've ended up in a kerfuffle as to what to go for now.

I've been looking to rebuild the car for hillclimbs and sprints for a while now and finally the means (cash) is there to start the project. I decided that to run competatively in class the car would need to be running with an engine producing near 400lbs/ft, irrespective of power. The main cause for concern was to not loose low/mid range punch and have a car that needed keeping on the boil and didnt produce the goods till 4k+ breaking my neck in the process (and grip on the track!). I know its a bit lame saying, right, i want an engine that produces xxx/xxx, and thats not what i'm after. 4xx/400 is a rough estimate and the main aim is to get the car up a twisty hill as quick as possible, driver permitting.

Since i have a 2.5 already, i thought it would be best financialy to rebuild it with more suitable pistons/rods etc. Then after reading through various 2.5 threads i thought it would be advisable to go down the 2.3 route for reliability since the 2.5 would be running close to its limits before 'blowing headgaskets' or 'cracking cylinders'. Especially when the only use it will see would be in anger, so to speak.i.e. it wont be used for going down to the shops or visiting the relatives. Can anyone give me a straight answer as to whether there will 'more than likely' be failure with the 2.5 in the guise as stated and if it's worth going down the 2.3 route?

Also trying to decide on turbo choice. Think the 20g will be best suited to the 2.5L but was considering a 49 or gt30, not knowing if the 20g would produce the results expected.

We are all confused mate ask Mr Lewis
Hi mate you could look in the projects area, also the 2.33 seems good, but the 2.5 with stronger internals is not bad too, which one is better I don't know...

If my 2.5 will need rebuilt with new rods/pistons/bearings etc, would it not be similar in cost to build a 2.3 and then have peace of mind that there 'should' be no problems running it? (i'm aware there's always something going to let go somewhere down the line on a high performance engine). And would the 2.3 be able to give a wider power band with its less restrictive rpm limits whilst still producing similar torque as a 2.5??? Gearbox will be 5sp ppg with 4.4 diff's.
