Impreza 05 STI (non PPP), currently car is using Shell Helix 10w/30 Fully-sin,(car brought from Romford main dealer) but my local dealer (colchester) says they will use 10w/40 semi. So what should I use, I am told fully sin is really dear stuff and only really used in WR1's.
Also should I get the oil changed in between the servicing which is every 10k, so a change every 5k?.
Thanks
Darren.

Hi m8, my scoob main dealer says use semi synthetic which if you speak to a scoob specalist they will tell you to use only fully synthetic as it offers alot more protection, personally i use Fully Synthetic 10w40 Either motul, shell helix ultra, or mobil1 0w40 fully synthetic, and i know of at least 50 scoob owners only use fully and i change my oil and filter every 3k so there's no harm in you doing yours every 5k

How much dearer is fully synthetic over semi? would like a 4 litre bottle be enough?.
I guess if I wanted to stick with what I got I would have to supply it to the dealer, but mind you they should have stock!?.

You need 5 litres, oil change is typically 4.5 so you'll have a bit spare. If you are going to provide your own fully synth, you can reduce costs by purchasing 4x5 litres in bulk, about £32 per 5 litre can.
IMO If you do the usual commuting miles with occaisional blasts when situations arise, never track it or autobahn it, then personally I would go for a proper ester based fully synthetic 5w40 and change every 10,000 miles.
I use Silkolene Pro S, the price mentioned above is for this oil from Oilman, who posts on here.
This is all IMO, use the search if you have a week to digest the many heated dicussions had daily on this subject!

Cheers Jay, will continue the search. It was just werd last night at the dealers when I mentioned fully synthetic he said "ooo no, don't put that in", as if it would buggy up the engine or something, but then told him thats whats in the car from the romford garage
.
Well if fully synthetic 10w/30 will be ok in an STI, and isn't that much dearer I think I'll stick with that.

Generally if you ask a dealer about an oil that isn't out the back in 25l drums, they tend to advise you against it
