Last weekend took my 2002 STi to have its cambelt changed at my local dealer. £300 slight ouch but cheaper than engine rebuild. Whilst waiting for them to finish was chatting with service manager and he was sying that Subaru only do a cam locking tool for the right hand bank (drivers side) and don't do one for the left hand bank
. He had recently ordered a universal one to solve this problem. I wonder what other X file style querks have Subaru provided???

The cams on the left hand bank don't move when you remove the belt as long as you have the timing marks in the right place, hence the need for just one locking tool...... it's the exhaust cam on the right that 'jumps' when the belt is removed..... next time i do mine i shall spend half an hour making my own locking tool.......

I have done a couple of belts and didn't need any locking tools. If you put the belt on with the pin still in the tensioner you can turn the right hand pulleys with a spanner and they will jump 1 tooth at a time. There is just enough tension to hold the Cams in place until they are lined up and can pull the pin out.
