Default Sounds like exhaust blown under boost - but???

Hi All

I've got a turbo 2000 on a 96- no mods

In the last week or so i've noticed a noise developing.

Whilst driving sub 3k revs the car sounds fine, anything above 3000 there is a noise i can only best describe as similar to an exhaust blow, have popped the bonnet and it appears to be coming from around the back of the engine near the turbo. Whilst accelerating the noise is progressively louder in line with acceleration, upon backing off it decreases. Have not noticed any less power but obviously since i started hearing this i've been more cautious with the right foot.

Car is booked into a subaru dealer for investigation - but wonder whether anyone has had similar, and could advise as to what it could potentially be. Little daunted by the prospect of the turbo being knackard

Have kept oil levels and coolent topped up and run idled engine after heavy use.

So has anyone had similar? know what sorta money something like a new section of exhaust/ gasket etc in that area would be? or even - and please i hope it's not this, how much to have the turbo fixed up.

If the noise only appears when on boost i bet its your up-pipe gasket that has failled, its a small pipe that fits between your exhaust manifold and then connects to the base of the Turbo (This will be the failled gasket-Turbo End), when pulling boost you will hear what sounds like an exhaust blow from the back of the Turbo area.

It can be a pain to do because of the age of the car as the studs will be corroded where it connects to the Turbo, but with ramps and patience its a 2 hour job and that includes replacing any damaged studs.

It will be expensive because you've given it to a dealer! Depending on location get it to a specialist once the investigation is over
