Is it safe to drive the car while the top rad hose is split?
Just wondering, cos I need to get it to a garage in the morning if the AA refuse to take it 30 miles to the clinic for me..
How far is safe if at all?
Is there any way (read duck tape etc) that I can make it safe to drive 30 miles up the motorway if I can find the leak?

depends how sensible / handy you are.
Personally I'd tape it up the best I could, make sure I had plenty of spare bottled water with me, and keep my eye glued on the temp guage, stopping and topping up regularly...
Shouldn't be a problem unless it's absolutely honking out.

Go to halfords(good accessory shop) and get some 'fix-o-leak tape'.Its for hoses.Come with two rolls of tape one rubber and one cloth.Clean the hose, wrap the rubber tape round first the go over with the cloth tape.It will work just fine.

Why take it all that way just for a top hose. Any competent machanic at a local garage will be able to do that simple repair for about 30quid or less as there's nothing out of the ordinary about a subaru cooling system. If you drain the system and refill then make sure you have the heater on for a good few miles after doing so, any air locks will cause it to stop blowing warm. Personally I'd just order a hose and change it locally tho. Oh and dont forget the anti-freeze of course it's gonna be a cold cpl of nights.
The AA usually agree to perform a scheduled tow to the nearest local specialist or dealership. I had mine towed recently. If you can convince them that the clinic is the nearest competent local specialist they might do it.
