Why are you having doubts?

I just recieved mine the other day, not got it fitted yet so cant comment personally but from everything i read it seems ideally suited for my intended use.

Excellent post/poll. Everyone looks for the answers but its never conclusive. Lets hope this one has some good comments from people with the turbos fitted and mapped.

I don't have my 18g yet(but will have soon),i run a vf34.From the research i've done the 18g is a excellent power/response turbo for a 2 litre engine.20g wheel is too big in my opinion for a tdo5h exhaust wheel. The step up from this would be the td06 20g as the exhaust housing and wheel are quite well matched but i would rather have a larger capacity engine to better response,ie 2.5.

The doubt I have is if I'm going to be disapointed with the power-diference from stock STi-turbo and maybe should go with a 20G instead.. What I would like to know with this poll is what people who are having the 18G thinks/feels.

I have posted the same poll over and Nasioc and the result so far is 1 person who should have gone bigger turbo and 3 who think they made the correct choise. Hopefully this statistic can make it an easier choise for people like me..

18g is spot on for a 2 litre, makes 20-30bhp more than vf34 and more importantly holds on till redline.20g is overkill ,you have done the right thing!

Thanks for your input. I'm quite new with turbo-names. Is the vf34 the stock Sti turbo? If not, what would the dif. be between stock and the 18G?

I have the 2004 STi and I'm running about 1.4-1.5 bar of boost.

Is the 18g also suited to a car with a 7800rpm rev limit.

Sure is. It doesn't run out of puff quite as easily as the smaller turbos.

I don't know about the number but it hasn't got the "bug-eyes". :-) I think it's called gdb?

Nice! Should be interesting I've just fitted an FMIC and induction kit. I have a Nissan 300ZX TT MAF to fit before the end of the month before a remap with Andy F again. I'll see how things go before changing the injectors but I suppose it is inevitable really. May get a flow matched set from Lateral performance.

Where does it end?

I really cant see enough good about the 18g
for a 2.0L road car it is simply sensational!
My 18g makes boost at almost identical revs to my old 16g, up until the weekend it was happy enough to give me 1.65 bar all the way to the 8k rev limit, but in the interest of engine life I have had the boost tailed off to 1.45bar from 6k rpm!
Its very punchy and feels spot-on in all situations. There are obviously turbos out that will make 600+bhp but the trade off is lag, the 18g just doesnt have any more lag than its smaller 16g version.
I cant see a good reason why anyone would choose a 16g over an 18g, the only consideration would possibly be cost, but it would be worth waiting and saving.
When I had my 16g, I was able to run 330bhp at 1.35bar, when I first fitted the 18g I made 340bhp at 1.2bar, since then I have gone to some quite serious lengths to make the whole set up more efficient, and the small matter of being able to peak 1.65bar will obviously help.
I can pretty much guarantee that if you get a good mapper with an 18g you will be grinning like a cheshire cat everytime you hit the loud pedal.

Recently I have been having doubts and thinking about selling up, the mods were taking too long and costing too much, the cuts on the hands just didnt seem worth the aggro
just this past month I have spent a bit more time sorting it out and spent a few hours getting some mapping in and it truely flies!
The sound is ferocious and it goes like stink.

The final point I have for you, (and this applies to 2.0L engines) I bet theres more than a few 18g's that are making better midrange power than some 20g's, the 20g power seems to be more top heavy. It might make better pub talk after work with a higher overall figure, but the sensible money looks lower
but then I would say that

Nah, I generally try to look inconspicuous (as you do in a scoob). And yes, it's the 550's I'd be looking at. My main worry is my gearbox falling out before I source a UK 6spd. That's why I'm trying to get away with not doing too much engine wise just yet. I must admit, these 18g's do sound too good to be true though - he says trying to put the thread back on topic

our American betheren usually have the 2.5L engine so they would opt for the 20g.
For our piddly little UK 2.0L then 18g has to be the way to go

Default td05-18g - md304

Slightly off topic but still relevant - how does the 18g compare to the md304 I have fitted?

More top end power? Less lag?
