try cleaning the wheel sensors and check the connections..
there is a way of checking the abs ecu for error codes..
the only other thing you can try.. is removing the fuse.. on my 96uk with fuse removed for driving in snow the abs light only comes on when you lock up.. ie. when the abs should come on.. obviously it would be a good thing for you to fix it but at least if this got you your ticket you could fix it at your leisure..

hey thanx for tips, the problem arose when it failed the mot because the abs light which is supposed to come on for a few seconds then go out when the engines started didn't come on at all , hence the fail, initially i thought bulb was blown, on further investigation i found some ****** had removed the bulb holder and bulb ,i replaced it with one of the others to try it now its permanently on, obviously taken out by a previous owner to hide the fact abs was shagged

I did this on my last car n it worked so dont see why a scooby should be any different.
Try jackin the car up 1 wheel at a time, unpluggin the sensor for that wheel. Put a multimeter accross the contacts of the sensor in Ohms mode. Then spin the wheel slowly, u should see the resistance go high then low if the sensor is workin ok, it'll remain the same all the time if its shagged.

I had sucess unbolting the sensors and wiping them clean, they are a magnetic rod with a coil around them, and they seem to have accumulated metallic bits and dust from the rotor wear. My ABS light had been staying on now and then after startup, and eventually reached the point of staying on all the time, the ABS also seemed to be disabled while the light was on, which i was not happy about. Also a MY98

cheers guys got it through the mot by piggy backing the bulb to the airbag bulb so light came on when ignition turned on and went off after 3 secs or so so to fool the mot man into thinking alls ok
BUT DON'T WORRY I AM GOING TO SORT IT ASAP but in my time will try the suggestions above to solve it or book it into scooby garage if all else fails ,any idea of cost?
cheers
