what is the best sort of head gasket to use after failure? i know you can get the OE one's but i've seen multi layer metal ones as well, are these any better?

Early cars use a composite gasket, but you can use the multi layer gasket fro the STi 3/4. These are very good, and more than up to anything you're likely to throw at it.

I had multi-layer steel gaskets fitted on advice of the specialist who did the work. Also fitted APS non stretch stud bolts just to be sure
