Default Basic mod's and safe boost

I'm looking to get an MY99 UK Turbo.
Just wondering what the basic mod's to get more power would be. Obv, filter and exhaust, but do people actually use an MBC or bleed to turn up their boost? Or do you leave that to the ECU? Also, what is a safe boost level without any fuel re-mapping? Does the standard turbo have an adjustable actuator?

Aplogies for the newbie questions, I've been on subaru-impreza.org for a few day's, and not many people tend to touch their boost.

Thanks

From what I've seen, people on here who use manual boost controllers are using them as a stopgap measure until they can get the car mapped up properly. The Scoob's boost control system uses a boost signal from the compressor outlet feeding the actuator which is set at around 8psi. But the twist is that there is also a factory boost solenoid plumbed in which bleeds off boost under ECU control to allow higher boost pressures. In other words it's not a purely mechanical system, therefore people tend not to mess about with winding the actuator in and out. From memory, it's not adjustable anyway, as it's offset a little bit from the wastegate so can't be just rotated to change the length of the rod.

IIRC the fuel cut is very roughly 16 psi, or 1.1 bar, although no doubt someone can confirm. Basically, it's not like modding a 200SX. Most people who know what they want to achieve look at remapping or replacing the ECU rather than mechanical methods, as the actual hardware that's there already is fairly capable. A standard TD04 which your prospective UK turbo will have can apparently run around 280bhp top whack and almost anyone aiming for 300bhp and upwards changes the turbo.

I own a MY00, bought 6 weeks ago standard apart from Magnex back-box and centre decat.

Changed dpipe to Ninja sports cat, JR Panel filter and remapped it to 273bhp/272lbft @ 1.25bar via Ecutek Tek3.

Have a look here:

Basically, buy a standard 99 if thats what you want. Then spend about a grand and achieve 270/280bhp - properly. A remap by someone who knows what they are doing is the safest way to go.

Yes you can fart about with Dawes etc. but I wouldn't, get the job done by someone who does this for a living.
