I don't think that's a good idea. Get into a smash and the inspectors will void the insurance. I believe it it your resposibility to ensure that the insurers have the correct details.

Don't go by anything on the V5. I imported my WRX myself a few months ago and filled all the details in the application correctly, when the V5 arrived they hadn't used hardly anything I put down. It just says Subaru. They also decided it was a 5 door hatchback when I clearly put on the application it was a 4 door saloon Being an import they don't know what it is so they use whatever comes up first I guess.
Apparently there were a few special pro-drive imported scoobys that couldn't pass the esva so they were registered as 1.8 gl's though.
The chassis number will tell you exactly what it is. You want the bit that starts GF8 if its wrx hatch.

my wrx was imported and when i came to insure it, it to come up with it being a gl ...
i had to tell them a few times that it was a wrx . even tho i could have got away with it and it was cheaper its best to be up front in case u have a claim

However, it still comes up on some insurer's websites as a GL
You know what your car is, an insurance assessor will probably know what your car is. Get your car insured as a WRX, and if it bothers you, return your V5 to the DVLA with a cover note explaining what you want changed.

basically there is now uk equivalent to your import, as there was never a uk wrx wagon in 1995. so the closest thing on the dvla records for that year will be a gl.
Ive had 3 sti's with gl on the v5, even my type-r says it due to the P1 not being manfacturered until later in the year.
