Default Cost of Alternator? (not £471)

Looks like the alternators packed in on my MY97 UK turbo. Quick call to the dealer and i just about passed out when he said £471!!!!!!! I soon told him not to be so stupid and that i'd look elsewhere. A couple of folk have said its cheaper to get it reconditioned or part exchange for a re-con. What should i expect to pay?
