Default Just bought a MY98.......HESITATION Problem :-(

Ok guys, Just bought a MY98 uk impreza turbo, problem is it seems to have a bad hesitation problem when i'm planting my foot down, the cars fine when i gradually build up the speed but if i plant my foot down the problem starts, it's really bad in 2nd and 3rd but can happen in any gear.

I Unplugged the maf while car was idling and it spluttered and then cut out, so does that mean that the maf is ok?

The car has also just had new Ngk plugs fitted and a new fuel pump and fuel filter fitted, these were done by the previous owner a few weeks ago.

Can anyon give me some much needed advice as to what the problem could be?

Thanx in advance

Mate,

I am NO expert whatsoever, however, the symptons sounds very much like what I've started to suffer today and have suffered in the past

Also meant to say, the hesitation is quite bad, it's a bit like hitting a brick wall, really throws you forward in your seat, gave the missis a heart attack first time it did it, lol.

I've done nearly 750 miles in the last couple of days, it only started to develop the fault on the way home. I knew straight away what the problem was/is as it suffered the same thing last year. IIRC it cost about £90 supplied and fitted

The other half looked at me and said 'What the f**k was that?' I knowingly looked at her and said 'It must be the boost solenoid'. I think she was impressed as I tell her I can't even operate the washing machine

As I've already said, I'm no expert, but it sounds very similiar

Default solenoid

You can either remove it from the car and spray carb cleaner through it , or you can leave it on the car and join the plugs under the dash (green/black) with the ignition on..so it pulses the solenoid..then spray carb cleaner through the pipework.
There are lots of posts on SN about this .

If it's the brick wall hitting affect, then it's probably a split vacuum hose. It sounds like you car's overboosting. When this happens, all power is cut, then comes back again almost instantly.

Mine did this every time I floored it when a hose popped off.

Question

I've got the same sort of problem with mine. Thing is mine only does it on light throttle, you get a sort of miss fire/lumpyness then clears as you floor it. Dosen't do it all the time though, can go a few days n it'll be fine?
Any body know if this is the same sort of prob, or something else

If your boost solenoid was gunged up causing the overboost problem - it happened for a reason. Either the previous owner had never checked it themselves and just lived with the problem without telling you; or they enthusiastically overfilled the oil before selling it. Either way, you need to check the oil level and make sure that it is between half way and the top mark. Any more and you risk the same thing happening again - unwanted oil vapour blowing through the plumbing and getting in the solenoid, inlet tract, turbo, intercooler and throttle body.

I had the same problem, though 5th was more noticeable.

Turned out to be the previous owner had overfilled it with oil before handing the keys over to me.

How full is the tank? My old sti 4 used to suffer from fuel starvation if the tank was reading around 1/4 full.
Brim it up and see what happens.

Yeah, it was 1/4 full, so tonight i filled up with optimax and went for a spin and the car was perfect. So it must have been fuel starvation aswell. what can i do to cure this?
