Default spec c roof scoop

Is the 80 km/h speed restriction on the roof scoop genuine. If so do they reinforce them on the group n rally cars?

Roof scoops were introduced to increase cabin pressure to keep dust from getting in through cracks etc. First put on the leggies in the safari rally, they were of old land rovers.
Keeping it open on high speeds in a type RA, the glass in the windows start blowing out, you hear the wind screaming outside. Doubt the noise is a problem in a rally car........
My friend popped mine open at 70mph, bent the whole 'clasp'.

Thanks guys, I am sort of hoping the 80k is to do with opening and closing (managed to trap my finger the other day opening at about 50mph closing seems ok though) lets face it how often is a scooby doing less than 80ks so i'm hoping it survives. (not sure about the landrover reference though......I thought it was off an old mini Van; either way, it's seems rather an agricultural solution)

p.s. whether open or closed the windows start singing at about the same speed on mine

Should be pretty quiet in the cabin apart from the exhaust noise (people think the standard exhaust is quiet ) with no noise from the windows at all.

i think your having me on with the lack of noise from the windows in your cars. My old wrx started at 110 the c spec about 100/105. And yes i can still here it above the exhaust noise (milltek)

p.s. mistakenly hit 100 with the scoop open today.......and its doesn't seem to have BENT!!

The STI group A legacy's, pre-prodrove cars had scoops off old Land Rovers, seen them being fitted to the cars used for the Safari, a mate of mine still has one of them out in Kenya.
There is definately MORE wind noise at high speeds with the vent open.

Nope, unless its not wound up properly then you get a high pitched whistle noise but otherwise no, pretty quiet above the sound of the quiet ( ) standard exhaust if i can hear my self think with the radio on like 30+ volume

Gary they're wound up properly and they whistle ...honest.

On the history of roof scoops, they have been around for a while. I remember a mate having one on a Nissan 240Rs, about the same time they were on the Lancia 037, and Renault 5 Maxi...(from memory) and probably other rally cars.

ok, I know they've been around, was pointing out when they were first used by STI when they first arrived in Kenya for the safari rally.

Mine bent, your's didn't, glad it didn't, it could happen........ because it did.

Am I right by saying there is more noise from the windows when the scoop is open at high speeds? Or is my case a one off....

I would say the same noise but earlier with the scoop open, i.e. lower speeds. Do you agree?
But lets face it at the speeds we're talking about there's plenty of other (nice) noise elsewhere.

Did you manage to source a replacement easily.

I wonder if Prodrive make a reinforced version.....I will call them tomorrow.

I've been told that the glass on the type RA's had thinner glass.

Can definately say there is more wind noise at higher speeds when the scoop is open. Maybe our cars differ I guess.

I've measured the thickness of the glass in the side windows, They are thinner than on the wifes impreza (although hers is an 03 and mines an 06).so i guess that doesn't help the noise. Mines a 'C' not the RA
