Default Gearbox code washed off????

Looking to purchase a gearbox but the seller says that the code was taken off with a jet washer when cleaning so cannot give me the code.

I thought they were stamped in the casing?

How else can you tell what year and model the gearbox it is from?

Without that number you are in the dark unless the box is opened up and all the gears counted...but I have done the count by turning the input shaft and counting the output's radial movement, but you do have to keep both outputs 'together' due to the diff being open.

Good fun.
