uppipes and downpipes?

Im pretty sure of what the downpipe does but whats the uppipe and where is it?

up pipe connects under the Turbo and onto the headers i believe...

so the uppipe connects the turbo to the manifold and the downpipe connects the turbo to the exhaust?

In order from the cylinder heads onwards-

Headers (exhaust manifold- snake like thing under front of car)
up pipe (single pipe about a foot long)
Turbo
Downpipe (curves down underneath the passenger seat floor pan)
centre section
Back box

may seem naive here bit would an up pipe have a cat??? would there be a scenario for replacing an up pipe???

The new age cars have a cat in the up pipe as far as I know.

Yep New age WRX's have a cat in the up-pipe

In high power mods the EGT temps rise with the possibillity of melting the cat in the up-pipe which lunches the turbo ..eeeek !!

That's why I have no cat in my up-pipe

PS I have a sneaky feeling the new age STi's don't have a cat in the up-pipe

my version 4 type r wouldnt then?
would there be value in replacing it with a heat wrapped one?
