brand new turbo ...faulty !
i fitted a new garrett gt30 turbo that sits in std position to my p1 and when i started it up the turbo/up-pipe gasket was blowing so i drove it 40 yards and then brought it back in this evening to removed turbo to fit gasket.
when i took off the down pipe loads of water came out about 1-2 pints, when i looked at exhaust side of turbo it was all rusted up looked like it was sat at the bottom of the ocean !
remember that this turbo was all ported and polished up and had only been running on idle for 10mins
i remeved turbo and filled with water no-leaks, i susspect that there is some sort of crack in the core that opens up when the turbo is warm
any ideas or has anyone come across this before ?
thanks in advance
matt

Sounds to me like the seals inside are knackered or something? I had to recently fit a turbo on mine (thanks Ted Ed) because oil and water was coming out. It was only internal though, none from outside the housing at all. There was just lots of oil smoke and water coming out of the exhaust. But the water was only probably a little more than if it were a icy morning or something. To be honest, to have that much water coming out so quick it sounds more like the unit hasn't been built properly. Like seals not pressed in or something correctly. I'm quite new to turbo's but hope this helps.

still after some serious help here
i just come back from replacing the turbo minus the downpipe and theres water leaking from the up-pipe/headers join and also water slightly spraying through the turbo ?
and the only changes i have made has been from vf28 to gt30 and a set of headers and when i removed the vf28 it was bone dry and free from water!
any ideas ?

turbo
Sounds like the turbo has an internal crack on the water side at the heat exchanging part of the turbo.
You could connect a water pressure tester to the cooling system to see if you have any pressure loss.

If youve got the turbo off now take the snail housing off (should be easy if its a brand spanker) and have a look to see if theres any witness marks where the water was coming from.

are you sure (when you swapped them) the water feed to the turbo didn't drop down and empty a load of water into the open up pipe, then when you refitted it and ran the car it maybe blew it through the exhaust housing into the exhaust.
Sounds like a lot of water to come from a faulty turbo?

If you mean behind as in behind the actual turbine wheel itself then it must be the seal.

Strange , im sure the cooling water just goes through the middle of the main body of the turbo with the oil each side of it on the bearings, for water to come out of here it would have to pass through the oil system (not positive on this tho). Have you tried taking comp' wheel off & the shaft out?
