The new VFs (30,34,35) are a good step forward from the older generation (VF23,4,8,9).

Pick of the bunch for an 8K rev limit has to be the 34, spools well, is safe above 1.4bar and can retain good efficiency to the redline.

All IMHO of course.

Not sure I understand what you are asking, a VF34 has a P18 housing.

the 18g would be better but you asked what the best vf is

i have a vf34 and its just under 350 bhp
the 18g would support upto 370 bhp with a bit more lag

I have the same problem, which turbo to go for, a VF34 or a TD05-18g?

So far the modifications as as follows

Forged STI pistons
Version 8 crank & rods
Ported heads
Piper cams
Blitz Front mount intercooler
Forge recirculating dump valve
Inducation Kit
Equal lenght headers
Decat 2.5" exhaust
Walbro Fuel pump
Uprated organic clutch
NGK PFR7B Spark plugs
EcuTek Remap giving 317bhp & 310lb/ft at 21psi on Optimax
the car was using the standard 440cc injectors at 90% cycle duty
and a standard IHI VF28 turbo.

I recently installed a larger VF22 turbo but i
don't think this is the right turbo for me to move forward with, the VF22 turbo seems to be far to slow to spool but does seem to perform much better at higher rpm's. I make comparisons between my P1 and a friends P1 which is of a near identical spec to mine but is still using the VF28 turbo and although the spool is much quicker it seems to run out of puff, which is why i think a move back to the VF28 turbo for me would be a retrograde step.
Anyone got any ideas?

If the choice is VF34 or 18G then 18G everytime, I like 'em so much I bought one myself

I don't agree that they are laggier than a VF34.

So if you wanted to keep the power band in the same sort of RPM range as the VF28 and wanted to be "forced back into your seat" more...then the TD05 18G is the one to go for?

Although my car is a WRX and so my VF34 is not mapped to its maximum, it does not run out of puff at high revs and pulls well all the way to the red line. Which again on my lowly WRX is only 7k too.
As for being forced back into your seat, the VF34 does that and like i said, mine is not mapped out of its skin either so i would love to feel that.

I'm with Andrew here, pick of the VF's for power and reliability is the VF34 but the TD05-18G is a step up again.
Depends on your supporting mods of course, not much point in over sizing your turbo if running a std induction or exhaust for example.

Default agree with andy

If you want to upgrade you may as well just go for the 18g....(Mine is on order from Andy F...) with supporting mods is said to be excellent for road use....

Hi wat about twin scroll VF's like VF37,38, 42???? Here is info i have...

VF37 (thrust bearing)
Enter the age of twin scroll IHI turbos. Same compressor housing as VF30/34, however has a new twin scroll P25 exhaust housing that provides slightly better top end output due to reduced exhaust pulse interference. Twin scroll also provides better spool up for improved low down response over the VF30/34. This turbo is good for 400HP and used on JDM STI from 2003 onwards.

VF38
Twin scroll turbo with titanium turbine and shaft. Smaller compressor housing than VF36/VF37 provides tremendous spool up capabilities but less top end than VF36/37. The spool capabilities of this turbo are demonstrated on the JDM Legacy GT, which reaches peak torque at 2400RPM.

VF42
Exclusive turbo to the S203/S204 models, this features a twin scroll design with a slightly larger compressor than the VF36/37 turbos and different turbine design (more blades). The VF42 is a roller-bearing turbo and is likely of similar size to the VF22 turbo, but with twin scroll exhaust housing for faster spool and superior top end performance due to reduced exhaust pulse interference.

And yes will have supporting mods. Everything off my present car going over. Will be on a V5/6 Type r when i find one i really like. Full Steel build, Uprated headers and full exhaust system fully heatwrapped, fuel press reg, mocal oil catch tank and oil cooler etc etc and have a Motec M48 Pro there. So choice is one the turbos above or 18g td05. I'm keeping the TMIC. Don't want a FMIC. Not for moment anyway.

VF38 Reaching peak torque by 2400rpm??? that sounds great. Now its says runs outta puff quicker then 37 but if it wasn't til 6500-7000 revs then i'd survive it. Any one experience in any above VF'S??

To fit one of the twin scrolls you will need to change the downpipe, headers and uppipe, and sump I think.

.
To achieve 400bhp on this turbo you will need to chose your rolling road very carefully and bung the operator a tenner in my opinion

scoobyDAZZA : Please do not regurgitate scooby myths.
Do you have first hand experience of Well Lane?
Just because you read something on here, do not believe it is true unless there is credible evidence to support it.
Well Lane rolling road produces figures in line with Dyno Dynamics rolling roads and has done for some considerable time.
