Default Switch on transmission tunnel: what does it do?

Hi There

I hope that someone can help me.
I have a STI II RA which has a small round switch on the tranmission tunnel.
This switch has a small led in which lights up in one position, but only when the driving lights are on.
Does anyone know what this switch is for as it seems to do nothing of significance.
Thanks
