Question ECU Change

Hi All,

I'm considering an ECU upgrade. Can anyone recommend particular makes that have been reliable and made a significant difference to drive-ability? Ive had a quote for an ECUtek upgrade and mapping for 650. Does this sound reasonable?

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

M

Alot of people use a Power FC I think it's made by Apexi. I'm not saying it's any better, just throwing another name at you.

The price sounds about right.

I would imagine either would improve driveability even if you have no other mods.

What MY do you have? it helps if we know what you have so we can see if you need a new ecu or a piggyback/remap

you might want to consider freeing up the breathing a bit more before you go for a remap/ecu. DeCat downpipe and uprated panel filter will give you noticeable improvements in spool-up time, boost threshold, midrange torque, and a bit more top end power....all great for better driveability. More importantly, you'll lower charge temps which will then allow you to safely extract more performance when you eventually go for a ecu upgrade.

You need to speak to some mappers about what your requirements are and decide from there.

Ecutek is a piece of software that mappers use to alter the maps in the standard ecu, it is not a replacement ecu. Changing the maps that are on the ecu is known as a remap.

Having the car remapped, or even having the scoobysport back box fitted, may invalidate your warranty, or part of it.

ECUTEK is probably the way ahead for you if you just want minor mods (even with major mods its still pretty good ) BUT note that you WILL invalidate your warranty in whole if you do so.

You don't need to change the ECU on your year of car unless you are looking for 500+bhp.
An Ecutek custom remap would be your safest and best option.
This is an internationally recognised upgrade service only available via vetted and approved professional tuners.
Prodrive use Ecutek for Subaru factory approved upgrades.
If you look around, the price can be well under the £650 you have been quoted.

sweaping statement there Andy..

Alternative retains all the standard features of the ecu.. safety would be related to the operator of the laptop rather than anything else.

Best in what way? value for money?

re-thinking.. perhaps we shouldn't get into this.. ecu comparisons seem to encourage arguments.. although perhaps the key element to an argument is missing in this comparison..

lol I was meaning relative safety in respect to available tuners

There is at least some approval process and liability insurance guaranteed rather than any part time tuner that has a lap top having a go.

Not meant as a dig at you Simon but there are some out there that have tweeked a few mates cars and now claim to be qualified engineers/tuners.

There is a lot more to mapping the new age cars than initially meets the eye.

I would suggest that for that particular car the best and safest approach is to remap the factory ecu, add a full decat, free flow panel filter and uprated fuel pump and you will safely end up with 360/370 bhp and 400 ft lbs torque ... without cracking any ring lands.

The oem new age ecu is good for more than 500 bhp given the right approach to anciliary's and complimentary mods.

Not "easy" though and relies on access to parts of the rom file that the open ecu guys only dream about (lol).

I agree with Andy on this.

cheers
