Question low oil, damaging..?

hypothetically speaking.. would running a scoob engine (ticking over for ~20 sec) with around a litre of oil less than full be damaging..?

Someone I know.., refilled the oil (pre-filling filter), put enough in to be just visable on the dipstick (being wary of overfilling) then ran the engine for a very short time (as above) only to find the level off the dipstick & needed almost another litre to get to the top notch..!

He.. estimated that he'd put 3.2 ltrs in first time, adding nearly a litre to make a total of 4ltrs.

You ould say he was a bit of a 'dipstick'..!

Should really crank engine with disconnected crank sensor when changing oil.
Not sure of degree of damage; how long is a piece of string.......

Crank disconnected and engine turned over several times to establish initial dipstick reading. Oil light went off almost immediately on subsequent fire up.

It'll be fine, I generally put in 4litres for starters and it's barely on the dipstick after running it.

There is oil in there, the pickup is at the bottom of the sump and you have 3litres of oil over the top of it, it's not going to do any damage.

Now if you took it for a few laps round a race track, it would be a different story

Given the 'know' problems with having too much oil in the sump, do you guys usually fill to the top mark or somewhere in between..?

Suppose it depends on if your car uses oil or not, mine doesn't so I usually try and get it somewhere between halfway and top.

Just on minimum when the oil's cold. When warm it sits halfway. Don't fill to F when cold.
