Yes it has been done one of the LADS (lancashire and district subaru owners) did it to his sport, though its cheaper to just buy a turbo

Wouldnt it be easier to drop a Turbo 2000, WRX STi etc etc engine into a sport then supercharging or turbocharging the exsisting Impreza sport engine.

A lad close to me dropped a WRX STi engine into his sport, but I gave up listening to him, when he said that he didnt notify his insurance company of converting his sport into a turbo and his I dont give a toss if I hit anyone attitude!

Its actually easier to just buy a turbo, you have drums on the back of a sport to start with, discs on a turbo, smaller brakes on a sport, bigger on a turbo etc, the costs of upgrading the car are more expensive than just buying a turbo, but if you want to do it, go for it though I think the guy only got about 200bhp out of the car, ill have to find the thread (he was at NBO last year with the car).

thats so irresponsible not telling the insurance. luckily i have full protected no claims so insuring one wouldnt be a problem

so why not just get mine supercharged?

i cant understand why mine has drums on the back

i am looking to change that anyway when i upgrade my brakes. surely supercharging is less maintenance and upkeep in the long run, plus i would beat all you lot off the lights

Supercharging is just as painful maintenance wise as a turbocharger, its just they work in different ways, the supercharger is belt driven directly off the engine so better response, the turbo uses the engines gasses, both use the engines oil for lubrication.
As for the rear drums, is yours one of the 115bhp or 123bhp models? I know that the 115bhp cars had rear drums on

I agree with Tony a lot of talk on the sport forum about converting to a turbo engine at times... a couple of guys have had a go at it but it's a massive job. First you need to buy a crashed wrx and then strip that then strip yours then rebuild... dont forget the suspension differences also.

i knew its belt driven, but thats about all i know

i'm not sure what bhp i have. my car is a limited edition, the yello one made in 2001. i can only assume mine has the higher bhp as the rest of the car has lots of extras as well

thats whats put me off, there are more reasons not to do it than to do it. what happens to a car when it gets supercharged then? it has got to be a lot less than a turbo conversion

I think the main problem you would encounter is finding a suitable kit. Due to there being an Impreza turbo, there hasn't been the demand to supercharge a sport. People just buy a turbo. Best option really, as you get the whole package.
But, i'm sure that you have lots of love for YOUR car, and therefore don't want to get rid of it. But would you want to rip its guts out?

You cant get an 01 Sport either; they stopped making Classics during Summer 2000. Yours is simply a late registration. The are plenty of late Classics available too, particularly Mica Red 'Wagons, many on a '51'.

To supercharge your car and for it to be worthwhile it would take a lot more than simply fitting Turbo running gear (thats engine, loom, ECU, exhaust, suspension, brakes F&R, transmission, rear differential at least).

Youd need a turbo engine to supercharge because you need stronger pistons, lower compression and an intercooler; then you just need to get the parts made, make it fit and get the new ECU mapped...

No they did not Sara; all Classic production stopped in Summer 2000. By October 2000 they were building New Age cars.

Your Sport was made between September 1999 and August 2000.

Because Im were SO greedy they couldnt sell a lot of their overpriced Classics, hence the '51' registered cars that you see from time to time. It took over a year to clear their stock.

Now Ive mentioned it youll notice that a lot of the '51' registered UK Turbos (virtually all, apart from the 2nd P1s) are Mica Red; no one would buy them and IM had a car park full a year after production of Classics had stopped.

Surely an engine/gearbox transplant is far easier and cheaper.

Can't you just buy a late classic turbo and spray it yellow?
