Default valve clearances/check adjust 01 bug eye

Hi all is it necessary to have my scooby valves checked and adjusted at 60k? somebody told me this but am just double checking..... What problems can occur if they are not set to the correct clearance? can it cause backfiring problems? Because mine seems to backfire quite a bit and has suffered from misfire problems..

Thanks in advance

Unless the clearance has reduced to zero or you have burnt valves, you won't get backfire or misfire. Look towards the ignition system or fuelling.

I would suggest that you clearances only need checking if the valve gear sounds tappety. Remember though that the injectors are on the top of the block and you may well hear these rather than tappets.

60000miles is a plug change time (every 30000 miles according to subaru), so these could be starting to break down, and also I have read that 50000 miles + is the sort of time when coil packs start to break down on bugeyes.

I would be looking at these for your misfire.

Default valve clearances

Thanks lads i'll give that a go! though i recentley had it in the garage for misfire problems, they sort of fixed it ,don't know what they did but it ain't the same car as when i first bought it? It lacks the punch it had...... didn't bring up any fault codes apparentely when they ran their scanner on it? would a fault code reader detect a misfire?

Shouldn't the newage ECU log a code and display CEL when it detects a misfire ?

Normally the CEL will flash in time with the misfire but I don't believe it stays on. I would expect it to log a fault code though.
