Question Classic Clutch Query

Hello all.

I am at the point where my clutch needs changing (93 WRX) so I have been reading past threads and now have a few questions that need answering.

I have noticed that there are two different size 225mm and 230mm both of which will apparently fit. However, I read that if a 230mm is fitted the flywheel will need skimming, is this correct, and what advantage is there to fitting a clutch that is a mere 5mm larger?

My motor also suffers with clutch judder as lots do, will a new clutch solve this, or do I have to get fitted a new/skimmed flywheel? Can any old garage do this or should I take it to a Scoob specialist?

Thanks guys.

225mm AFAIK is the standard size, 230mm will fit with a skimmed flywheel. Getting your existing flywheel skimmed is recommended and should solve the judder, alternatively you could get a new flywheel.

I have just received a new Exedy clutch from David @ APi, with a lightened flywheel (exchange). Total was £470 inc del + VAT, and on top of this a £50 'deposit' which is refunded when you send them your old flywheel.

Thank you for your interest in API Impreza.

We sell the Exedy performance clutch, which is the basis of the AP Racing organic clutch.

The Exedy is used on all our middle range: up to 400 bhp, cars and performs well. It comes as a 3 part set [ cover, disc, and bearing ] The operation of the Exedy clutch is light without any judders and superb grip.

Price of the standard Exedy for the 5 speed 230mm Impreza clutch is £220.00. The 230mm will fit all the 5 speed Imprezas from 1992 to current.

An APi lightened flywheel is an original that weighs 12.2 kilos reduced to around 7 Kgs which is the official homologated weight. .

An APi lightweight for the 5 speed car is £150.00 exchange.

Carriage to a BT postcode is £30.00 + VAT and we will pay for the collection and return of the old flywheel. There is a ' deposit' required of £50.00 on the old flywheel which is returned to you as soon as we have the old flywheel in our possession. No quibble.

If you are in the UK please add VAT [ Sales tax ] to all quoted prices.

If you need more information or I have missed something, or you wish to place an order, please call me on the sales line above.

Thanks and kind regards
David

Most garages should be able to do it, from what I hear it will cost £150-200.

On a much cheaper note.
My classic had awful judder when I got it at 70K miles "its a feature Sir"
Then started to slip so I got a new one.
Borg & Beck - now Delphi I think. Less expensive than Subaru, too long ago now and I cant remember.
Flywheel was pretty good so I just slapped it straight in.
Wonderful - no judder and that was 50K miles ago.

Don't risk a new plate with a knackered flywheel - I may just have been lucky with the flywheel.

I hear one of our regulars with a Green car and LOTS of power used the same clutch plate with no trouble too, although I think he may have upgraded recently as he's aiming to break the sound barrier

Thanks lads. What difference does its when fitting a 230mm clutch inplace of the 225mm, do you think its just another man thing, bigger is better?

We only keep the 230 as it fits every 5 speed turbo car and we don't have to worry about stock inventory or such like.

Yes it is bigger, so therefore it must have more failsafe room. It doesn't cost any more [ From us at least ] so why not ?

David. Does the flywheel need any mods for the 230mm to fit?
